This specific part is designed to reduce friction between the rotating clutch system and the non-rotating transmission components. It only engages when the clutch pedal is pressed, separating the clutch disc from the flywheel and allowing for gear change.
Once the clutch pedal is pressed, the release bearing moves towards the flywheel, pushing the clutch release fingers or diaphragm spring. This pressure disengages the clutch disc from the flywheel, momentarily cutting off engine power to the transmission, which allows the driver to shift gears smoothly. The bearing then retracts when the pedal is released, re-engaging the engine power to the transmission.
