Situated between the engine's flywheel and the clutch pressure plate, it facilitates the connection and disengagement of the engine to the drivetrain. This part is particularly essential for a manual transmission, where driver input is directly related to the performance of the clutch.
The clutch disc is comprised of a friction surface which grips the flywheel, allowing the transfer of engine power to the gearbox. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the pressure plate retracts, creating space for the clutch disc to spin independently, momentarily severing the engine's link and allowing for a gear change.
